Mitchell’s County Town, Berrima 1831-1841

In 1829 Surveyor-General Thomas Mitchell started laying out a more direct road to link Sydney with Port Phillip. Along this new line he selected a site above the Wingecarribee River in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. This would become the town of Berrima, the administrative centre of the County of Camden.

This book tells the story of Berrima’s first ten years when convicts, military, first-generation Australians and free immigrants made it their home. Most had arrived in the Colony with limited means but were able to buy or rent a small allotment to establish a business and raise a family.

Based on the author’s in-depth research and the use of the 1841 Census we find a thriving community which offered newcomers freedom and a prosperous life. Includes maps and photographs.
